Carnegie Mellon University

The university will be conducting mechanical work and replacing approximately more than 1,000 feet of in-ground steam, condensate and water lines along The Cut – between the College of Fine Arts Lawn and the Purnell Center for the Arts – during spring and summer 2024. Ground excavation begins after Commencement in May, and the new pipes will be installed in June and July. The area will be backfilled with dirt and landscaped in July and August.

Project areas will be marked with protective barrier fencing for awareness and safety. Pedestrians and wheeled-vehicle riders should avoid these active work zones. Areas located outside of the protective fencing are still open for public use.

Please note: At times, The Fence will be inside the protective barrier and inaccessible to the public in order to protect this beloved CMU tradition during construction. The construction team's goal is to limit the period of time that access to The Fence is restricted.
