Carnegie Mellon’s Wilton E. Scott Institute for Energy Innovation has named its student seminar series to honor the late Jared L. Cohon, who served as CMU’s president from 1997-2013 and as director of the Scott Institute from 2014-2017.
Each month, the Scott Institute’s Jared L. Cohon Student Seminar provides an opportunity for undergraduate and graduate student speakers from across the University to present their energy and climate-related research, entrepreneurship, and other energy-related activities to the broader Scott Institute research and innovation community.
Dr. Cohon left an astounding legacy across the Carnegie Mellon community, the region, the nation, and at the Scott Institute. Dr. Cohon led by example, encouraging everyone to think across systems and work together across boundaries to solve the world’s biggest challenges. He believed that CMU energy innovations could make the future better for everybody, and his vision was a key catalyst in the original creation of the Scott Institute. During his time as Director, he expanded the Institute’s research seed award program to drive breakthrough clean energy technologies, and he mentored countless early career researchers and students.
Dr. Cohon’s heart was always in the work, and he deeply valued his role as an educator and student mentor. The impact he had on students is part of his great legacy, and the Scott Institute is proud to name the Jared L. Cohon Student Seminar Series in his honor.
