Making the Most of Your Pittsburgh Visit
Because your student attends Carnegie Mellon, in one of the most historic yet ever-changing cities in the U.S., you’ve hopefully had the opportunity to explore it while you were in town over the past few years. But if Commencement happens to be your first time on campus or if you know you want to do a last bit of exploring on this trip, here are a few suggestions of activities you won’t want to miss.
- Visit a Pittsburgh Museum. From arts to science, history to sports, Pittsburgh offers great museums. Students may use their CMU ID card to gain free admission and families pay regular visitor prices.
- Take in a sporting event or attraction. While our CMU athletics teams will have wrapped up their regular season schedules, the Pittsburgh Pirates have home games scheduled around Commencement Weekend.
- Take in a family-friendly event for all ages. Visit the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium or the Children’s Museum.
- Explore with a Pittsburgh Tour. See the city by Segway, bike or boat.
- Love the outdoors? Take a hike in nearby Frick Park or Schenley Park. Both are accessible by car or the Port Authority bus. You can rent bicycles throughout the city. Pittsburgh’s waterfront has great walking/biking trails and kayaks to rent.
- Try a new restaurant. Pittsburgh was recently recognized as “2019 Food City of the Year” by af&co and has food options for all tastes and price ranges. Check out more than 130 restaurant recommendations and reviews from Discover the Burgh.
- Visit Fallingwater, one of Frank Lloyd Wright's famous architectural feats.
