Annual Giving Header

Over the past few years, I’ve had the chance to visit design programs around the country and the world. These visits are a reminder that we still offer a unique design education here at Carnegie Mellon. We teach students to care about the people they are designing for, to conduct research so they understand the context of the project, to sketch and test iteratively, and to pay attention to the details when realizing the final artifact. It is this attitude of problem seeking and solving that is needed in the world today and tomorrow. If we give our students a solid foundation of design thinking and making, then we will have prepared them for whatever challenges come at them in the future.

These efforts need financial support. If you have already made your gift this year, I thank you for your generosity. If you have not, then I encourage you to please give to the School of Design. I realize you may receive many appeals for financial contributions, but I hope this one will give you reason to pause and remember your days as a design student at Carnegie Mellon. Any amount you give directly helps design students and is vitally important to our continued success.

This past year, with your help, we were able to accomplish great things. We supported student trips to Chicago and San Francisco to visit design offices, as well as travel to various conferences. We also paid for prototypes of models for the Nakashima exhibition, students taking glass classes at the Pittsburgh Glass Center, and final presentation costs at the end of each semester. These are just a few examples of how your contributions make a difference, but ones I am pleased to share with you because they are part of daily life for our students.

I hope we can count on you to make a gift to the School of Design this year. On behalf of our students, faculty and staff, thank you!

Sincerely,
