Annual Giving Header

Thanks in part to the support of our alumni, the last academic year has been a remarkable one for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Among our most notable accomplishments has been the college’s continual focus on developing students with a global perspective. Information Systems has inaugurated a new “Global Systems and Management” minor, the Social and Decision Sciences Department is in the process of creating a “Global Politics” major, and the International Relations major continues to be very popular with students in H&SS and other colleges. Finally, the Modern Languages Department has seen record enrollment. Roughly 46 percent of Carnegie Mellon undergraduates take at least one language course during their undergraduate years, which is more than five times the national average!

The college experienced many milestones this year as well. Modern languages professor G. Richard (Dick) Tucker won the Doherty Prize for Excellence in Education. Professor of Statistics Stephen Fienberg and Professor of Philosophy Wilfried Sieg were inaugurated into membership in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Psychologist Marcel Just and computer scientist Tom Mitchell were awarded a $1.1 million grant from the Keck Foundation to pursue their breakthrough research using fMRI brain imaging on how the brain represents objects.

None of these accomplishments would be possible without your financial support. If you have already made your gift this year, I thank you for your generosity. If you have not, then I encourage you to please give to H&SS. Please make your commitment to the Dean's Innovation Fund today so we can continue to enrich our students’ opportunities. I also ask you to consider designating part of your gift to help meet the NEH Challenge in support of the Humanities Center.

Thank you for your loyalty to, and support of, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Sincerely,
