Student Monitors Animal Stress
Galit Frydman, a biological sciences major at Carnegie Mellon University (MCS '08), is analyzing the effect of human contact on elephant stress levels at the Pittsburgh Zoo. By better understanding elephants' physiological response to humans, she hopes to determine whether or not human contact is beneficial to captive populations.

Making of a Microphone
Students Find Recording Studio to be Interdisciplinary Hub
"Check. One, two...check," echoes the voice of Carnegie Mellon vocal student Anna Vogelzang. While this may be a typical day in the university's recording studio, this is not your typical microphone. It was custom-built by engineering student Eric Boulanger — who studied top-quality microphones on the market with the eventual aim of making something that out performed them all.

Carnegie Mellon student Liz Barsotti (CMU '09) — one of the chosen few who work at the University Press — looks up momentarily from her reading and scans the windowless room. Rubbing weariness from her eyes, she returns to the manuscript at hand — the 20th she's read tonight — and decides this one will have to be the last until she can catch a few hours of sleep. She may be tired, but she loves what she is doing.

The emoticon — a.k.a. Smiley — is celebrating its 25th birthday in September. Proud papa Scott Fahlman, a research professor of computer science at Carnegie Mellon, never dreamed that his suggestion for identifying a humorous post on a b-board would have such an impact on the future of the e-world.
