Voucher Process Frequently Asked Questions
Students should carefully review the Course Changes webpage and consult with their primary academic advisors before initiating any voucher requests.
What is the deadline for making a voucher request?
The University Registrar’s Office recommends making voucher requests as soon as possible, and no later than 4:30 p.m. on the day before last day of classes. If your primary academic advisor is unavailable to discuss your voucher elections, please consult with other resources within your academic department.
If I would like to use one of my vouchers over the summer, am I limited to one voucher for the entire summer?
No. Each summer session is treated as a separate semester. You may use a voucher in summer session one and a second voucher in summer session two.
Can I use a voucher to drop a course in order to avoid an academic integrity violation?
No. Students who have pending or documented academic integrity violation may not use a voucher to drop a course per the Academic Integrity Actions procedures. Any student dropping a course with an academic integrity violation will be re-enrolled in the course.
Can I use a voucher to switch to pass/no pass in order to avoid an academic integrity violation?
The pass/no pass voucher option may not be used to avoid an Academic Intergrity penalty. Any student using a voucher to elect pass/no pass grading without the instructor's approval may be reinstated with a course letter grading option.
Can I use a voucher for a PCHE course taken at a host school?
The voucher is internal to Carnegie Mellon courses only. Because cross registration add and drop deadlines vary by host instituition, the host school will not honor a voucher so late in the semester. It is advised to drop your course by the host institution deadline to avoid an incomplete or undesired final grade. Please be sure to fill out a Course Withdrawal (pdf) form by the host institution drop deadline.
I have already made a late drop election using a voucher. May I change it to a pass/no pass?
No. Course drops made using vouchers are irreversible. You may not switch to pass/no pass.
Do courses taken pass/no pass fulfill graduation, major, additional major, and minor requirements?
Courses taken pass/no pass will not usually fulfill graduation, major, additional major or minor requirements.
Do courses taken pass/no pass fulfill prerequisite requirements?
Courses taken pass/no pass only fulfill prerequisite requirements for courses that require a prerequisite grade of D or higher, even if you earned a higher letter grade before converting to pass/no pass.
