Carnegie Mellon University

The University Registrar's Office is excited to begin a new semester! As you prepare for the start of classes, remember to review and update the following information, as necessary.

It is important to double-check your course schedule and confirm your course modalities within Student Information Online (SIO). Keep an eye out for any changes, updates or cancellations.

Students based in Pittsburgh can use the interactive campus map to find classroom buildings and  the Schedule of Classes Legend webpage to look up building abbreviations.

If you are on a course waitlist:

You must be registered for a course in order to attend in-person. If you are waitlisted for a course, please do not attend in-person. If space becomes available, you will receive an invitation to register from the department.

You can find more information about waitlists on the Waitlist Navigation Guide webpage.

If you are registered for a course at another campus location:

If you are registered for courses at a campus location other than the one at which you are based, remember that these courses must be remotely attended synchronously (at the time they are scheduled) unless you receive permission from the instructor to attend asynchronously (by viewing a recording)

Course times listed in SIO align with the local time zone of the campus from which the course is taught. For example, CMU - Pittsburgh courses are taught in Pittsburgh time/Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) and CMU - Qatar courses are taught in Doha time/Arabian Standard Time (AST).

You should also familiarize yourself with the Academic Calendar for all of your course locations, including semester start dates and final examination schedules.

  • CMU - Qatar courses begin August 20
  • CMU - Pittsburgh, Africa, and Silicon Valley courses begin August 28

Please check and update your contact information under the SIO  "My Info" tab, including:

  • your local residence address (select "Off Campus Residence")
  • your permanent address (select "Permanent Address")
  • your mobile phone (select "Personal Information")
  • and your emergency contact information (select "Family & Friends" and check the "Designate as Emergency Contact" box in the entries for your chosen emergency contacts)

Record Your Name Pronunciation & Enter Your Pronouns

Through SIO's NameCoach feature, you can record the pronunciation of your name, store a phonetic spelling of your name, and store your pronouns. If you choose to store your information via NameCoach, it will be shared with those authorized to view your student summary in CMU's internal student information system, and instructors will be able to access the information through Canvas.

To record your name and enter your pronouns, click on the SIO "My Info" tab and choose "Pronunciation and Pronouns." Click the red "Name Recorder / Pronouns" button and follow the simple on-screen instructions.

To learn more about how Carnegie Mellon stores and uses your identity information, visit the Student Identity webpage.

Check or Update Your Race & Ethnicity

Take a moment to log in to Student Information Online (SIO) to confirm or update the student identity fields on your My Info page. While students are not required to report race and ethnicity, the Department of Education requires institutions to give students the opportunity to self-report this information. CMU is also required to report the collected information to the Department of Education.

We recognize that not all identities are represented in the selections provided; however, in order for the university to be compliant with this policy, the selections must be presented exactly as they are listed in SIO. Learn more about this federal reporting requirement.

If another individual pays your bills, you may wish to invite them to My Plaid Student (MPS) and provide authorization for them to receive copies of your invoices. To invite someone to MPS, log in to SIO and select 'Manage Family & Friends' under the 'My Info' tab.
