Support Carnegie Mellon’s 29th Annual Food Drive

Dear Members of the CMU Community:

Today, Staff Council launched Carnegie Mellon’s 29th Annual Food Drive. Carole and I are honored to chair this year’s initiative, which runs through Monday, November 14.

One of my priorities as provost is to advance Carnegie Mellon’s efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, also known as the Global Goals, which contribute to making the world a better place. Our food drive impacts several of these goals, including Goal #2, which is to reach zero hunger, and Goal #12, to reduce consumption and production. For CMU, that starts with eradicating hunger and sharing food resources in our own backyard.

Because of our continued and increased enthusiasm to help end food insecurity, our goal this year is to collect $125,000 in cash and nonperishable items. As part of our efforts, we also aim to collect 250 can openers that will go directly to the CMU Food Pantry. We hope you will consider contributing to our campaign, which is the highest-grossing food drive in the City of Pittsburgh. For your convenience, cash contributions to support the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank (GPCFB) can be made online.

We also invite you to join us at the Benefits & Fitness Fair on Wednesday, November 2. This in-person event allows you to meet directly with our benefit providers and representatives from the Office of Human Resources to learn about your 2023 benefit options. The Food Drive team will be on-site to collect 16 oz. jars of peanut butter, cash contributions, can openers and other nonperishables. Donate an item to be entered into various raffles:

  • For each 16 oz. (or larger) jar of peanut butter contributed, you will receive one ticket for a chance to win a month of free parking on campus! Other prizes will also be given.
  • For any cash donation, can opener or other nonperishable item, you will be entered into a raffle for original student art pieces.
  • For students only! Each $1 contribution, can opener or nonperishable item will give you a chance to win CMU swag, student paintings and more.

We look forward to another successful Food Drive at CMU. Thank you for your support and generosity each year, which is helping to end hunger and food insecurity in the region.

Sincerely,

Jim Garrett
