Media Advisory: Carnegie Mellon Engineering Students Compete In National Chem-E-Car Competition

Event: Carnegie Mellon University chemical engineering students will compete in the American Institute of Chemical Engineers 14th annual Chem-E-Car Competition in conjunction with its annual meeting and student conference. The competition emphasizes creativity in developing alternative fuels that could hold a key to America’s energy future.
 
“We are extremely excited about this competition because it is a great example of the important real-world applications of chemical engineering,” said Chem-E-Car team president Amy Yuan, a junior chemical engineering major from New York City. Yuan along with junior Katia Bazzi, a chemical engineering major from Texas, will square off against 31 other teams from universities across the country. 

Students use innovative fuels and materials, which have included beef liver and hydrogen peroxide reactions, to create and power a shoebox-size car to carry a specific load a predetermined distance. The car that gets the closest to the distance wins a $2,000 prize. The CMU car, named “Juggernaut,” is designed by the students.
