The Robotics Innovation Center at Hazelwood Green

Accelerating the Next Generation of Robotics and AI Technologies

The Robotics Innovation Center will advance Carnegie Mellon University's world-leading collaborative ecosystem for robotics, automation and artificial intelligence research and development. The cutting-edge facility will help solve complex challenges with real-world impact, kick start a new wave of innovation, and help redevelop Hazelwood Green, a former steel mill, into a nexus for Pittsburgh's new industrial revolution.

The RIC will add 150,000 square feet of advanced robotics research space for CMU faculty, staff and students, expanding the capacity and capabilities for foundational research, integration and commercialization.

With first-of-their-kind facilities at CMU for developing and testing of robots on land, water, air and space, researchers will make discoveries with applications in fields including health care, transportation, education, national security, agriculture, retail and beyond.

Complementing the work of CMU’s National Robotics Engineering Center, the RIC will create synergies that accelerate research, workforce and economic development and technology breakthroughs via its colocation with the university’s Manufacturing Futures Institute as well as partners in the Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing Institute, Catalyst Connection and University of Pittsburgh’s BioForge. The facility also will amplify CMU’s STEM education programs that engage Pittsburgh community members.
