Hazelwood City in the Streets Event

By Vu Nguyen

July 23, 2024 - PITTSBURGH, PA - It was the second attempt at Hazelwood's City In the Streets celebration in the Hazelwood neighborhood of Pittsburgh. Just a week prior, a severe thunderstorm had postponed the event. Nevertheless, this second attempt was incredibly successful as the community, vendors, and a large assortment of city departments brought free food, fun activities for children, and lots of resources for the neighborhood.
This was just one of several City in the Streets events that Pittsburgh's Mayor Ed Gainey has launched to bring government to the people. The event brought city officials to the neighborhoods to not only provide fun for the people but also to listen to any feedback that concerned citizens of the city had.

Carnegie Mellon University had invited our group (Carnegie Mellon Robotics Academy) to bring interactive activities for kids, and we happily accepted! We brought a challenge board, robots, laptops for playing some of our co-robot games like Acceleration City (created during our P3G project with local clubs), and of course: candy prizes!

We had several kids return to the table because they wanted to continue their progress with the games, but we also had parents come by to ask about the different activities. It was inspiring to see how much everyone was enjoying the activities.

Thank you to Mayor Ed Gainey, the city of Pittsburgh, and the wonderful folks at Hazelwood for such an incredible event!
