Getting Started with Study Abroad

As a Tartan, you have many options to take your education global!

What is Study Abroad at CMU? Study Abroad at Carnegie Mellon could mean taking courses, doing research, volunteering or interning abroad. Or a combination unique to you!

When Can You Study Abroad? You can study abroad for a semester or a year, for a summer, or participate in a short-term program over winter, spring, or fall break.

Where Can You Study Abroad? CMU has exchange partnerships with prestigious universities around the globe. You can also study abroad with hundreds of other universities as a visiting student, study with a program provider with classes specifically designed for study abroad students, or take classes in unique experiential and field-study based programs focused on critical global issues. Programs are available on every continent!

How Much Does Study Abroad Cost? Study Abroad is for everyone. CMU students can use Federal and CMU aid to study abroad during the semester or for an academic year. Scholarships and travel grants are available for students studying abroad during the summer or over breaks.

What's The First Step To Studying Abroad at CMU? We're so glad you asked. Here's the road map!

• Plan - Meet with your study abroad and academic advisors.
  • One to two semesters before departure
• Apply - Appy to study abroad programs.
  • Four to 12 months before departure
• Register -  Register for a pre-departure orientation session on Tartan Connect.
  • Register by Oct. 1 for spring and winter programs
  • Register by March 1 for summer and fall programs
• Forms - Complete the required CMU forms and the Canvas course
  • CMU forms are due at your pre-departure session
• Attend - Attend a CMU pre-departure session.
  • Early Nov. for spring and winter programs
  • Early March for summer and fall programs
• Go abroad - Enjoy your experience abroad!
• Return - Order your transcripts and process transfer credit through The HUB once you return.
