Make an IMPAQT

Over spring break, ten students from Carnegie Mellon's Pittsburgh campus traveled to CMU-Qatar as part of the IMPAQT exchange! Just before the break, we welcomed CMU-Qatar students to our Pittsburgh campus as well. IMPAQT's goal is to deepen the connections between Tartans studying in Pittsburgh and Qatar and promote intercultural understanding. It is also a great opportunity for you to visit our global campuses! Interested in taking part? Set up an appointment to find out how to get involved!

Thinking Of Scotland?

Jocelyn Morningstar, an Information Systems major, spent the fall semester of her third year studying abroad at the University of Edinburgh through IFSA Butler. We caught up with her on her experience abroad:

What was your favorite class abroad?

I took a course called Understanding Gender in the Contemporary World. We learned all about gender stereotypes, how they impact all areas of the world, and how they are connected to much larger issues. It gave me a new perspective on how to look at the world and showed me that gender biases are everywhere. One of the learning objectives of the course was to see the world in its gendered ways so that we can start to make changes in a more equitable direction.

What was your favorite thing you did outside of the classroom?

The program I studied abroad through set up a lot of fun activities for us to do if we wanted. Some of my favorite activities were taking a weekend trip to the Highlands, doing a boat tour of Lochness, seeing a professional women's soccer game, and attending a traditional Scottish Ceilidh. Through this program I got to meet a lot of other students studying abroad and making amazing friendships.

Any travel tips or advice for Tartans thinking of studying abroad?

Studying abroad is definitely intimidating and takes a lot of preparation, but it is entirely worth it. Getting to live in a different country and experience another university was such an eye-opening experience for me. While abroad, don't be afraid to try new things and ask as many questions as you can because, at the end of it all, if you embarrass yourself, you are never going to see those people again if you don't want to.
