The Cyert Center for Early Education — Morewood Avenue

The Cyert Center (originally the Carnegie Mellon Child Care Center) was founded in 1971, just a few years after Carnegie Tech merged with Mellon University to become Carnegie Mellon University, and was populated by just 12 children and a few staff members. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the demand for child care continued to grow, leading to an increase in program enrollment and staffing. Between 1996-1998 the program moved out of the basement of the Morewood Gardens residence hall and onto the first floor, which offered space for 100 children and even more staff. By 2000, there was a growing demand for more infant and toddler care. The physical space underwent another renovation, adding an infant classroom. Today, the Cyert Center for Early Education — Morewood Avenue remains located on the first floor of the Morewood Gardens dormitory, with space for approximately 120 children.

Structure

The Morewood Avenue location serves children ranging in age from 12 weeks through 6 years. The facility is made up of one infant classroom, one young toddler classroom, one older toddler classroom, one preschool classroom, one prekindergarten classroom, and one prek/kindergarten classroom. In addition, there are shared play areas, a studio, a kitchen, and an outside playground. The space was designed to build community, encourage collaboration, and provide space for both small and large group work.
