Fire and Life Safety Assessment Program

To protect lives, property and continuity of operations at the CMU Pittsburgh Campus, the Fire and Life Safety Assessment (FLSA) Program has been developed to effectively manage the potential risk of fire and demonstrate compliance with fire code requirements. The objective of Fire and Life Safety Assessments is to identify, assess and remediate potential fire and life safety risks, collect data for the prioritization of capital renewal projects, and promote a culture of safety throughout the university. The FLSA Program is a collaborative effort between EHS, Facilities Management and Campus Services (FMCS), the Division of Student Affairs (DoSA) and other campus stakeholders. The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Fire Safety Team assesses approximately six buildings (three academic/administrative and three housing) each calendar quarter. While the team assesses a wide range of potential hazards and fire code issues during each assessment, common assessment categories include:

  • Fire protection systems and equipment
  • Fire and smoke protection systems
  • Building services and systems
  • Means of egress
