Happy first Friday of October! This month is full of festive fall events and spooky intrigue as people prepare for Halloween. This week we have plenty of events that will get you in the autumn mood and even a few that will get you in the Halloween spirit! We hope you enjoy this issue of the OIE "Friday Greetings" email.

Afghan Dinner & Movie: Three Songs for Benazir

Dinner and a show! On Wednesday, Oct. 12, at 5 p.m., join the Frank-Ratchye STUDIO for Creative Inquiry team for Afghan Dinner and Movie Night: Three Songs for Benazir, a buffet-style Afghan dinner provided by local caterer Zafaron and a screening of the award-winning Afghan short film, Three Songs for Benazir. The screening will be followed by a discussion with the filmmakers Elizabeth and Gulistan Mirzaei, hosted by CMU Scholar at Risk and Visiting Researcher of Afghan Cinema and Drama Habibullah Sorosh. RSVPs are due by Oct. 10! Learn more about the event.

As You Like It

Starting Oct. 12-15, head to the Philip Chosky Theater for a gender-bending, rock-n-roll reimagining of one of Shakespeare's greatest rom-coms. MFA Director Peter Andersen takes the audience into the forest of Arden for some rebellious young love set to new music by Bandits on the Run, a Brooklyn-based indie/folk/pop/Americana band. Discounted student and staff tickets are available.

Our Pittsburgh Picks

Idaspe

Beginning Oct. 7-15, head to the Byham Theater downtown for Idaspe, the story of two children from the post-war Middle East who came to Naples as refugees. They are separated in an Italian underworld where organized crime runs rampant. The story follows the pair into adulthood and the circumstances they find themselves in. This production is sung in Italian with English text projected above the stage. Student ticket pricing is available.

Festival Of Combustion

Have a blast! On Saturday, Oct. 8, from 1 to 9 p.m., check out the Carrie Blast Furnaces for the return of the Festival of Combustion! Celebrate the industrial arts and American crafts at the Carrie Blast Furnaces and the creativity and innovation of our region's artists, makers, and builders. The Festival of Combustion features hands-on activities for adults and children alike, with demonstrations and experiences throughout the entire day and evening. Learn more and purchase tickets in advance.

The Peking Acrobats Featuring The Shanghai Circus

On Wednesday, Oct. 12, at 7 p.m., see the Peking Acrobats and the Shanghai Circus at the PNC Theatre! Watch as performers show off daring maneuvers atop a precarious pagoda of chairs and display their technical prowess at trick cycling, precision tumbling, juggling, somersaulting, and gymnastics. Including live traditional Chinese music! Learn more about the event and purchase tickets in advance.

National Pierogi Day

Saturday, Oct. 8, is National Pierogi Day! Pittsburgh loves its Pierogis, and this fun holiday is a reason to take a pierogi tour around the 'Burgh. These tasty dumplings are a staple part of many eastern European cultures. They are near and dear to the heart of many Pittsburghers. Why not take a trip around town to celebrate the event on the "Ultimate Pittsburgh Pierogi Road Trip?" Check out some local restaurants serving one of our city's favorite dishes.

Turner Cemetery History Walk

Start the spookiest time of the year with some local history! On Saturday, Oct. 8, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., explore Turner Cemetery, one of the oldest cemeteries in Pittsburgh. Turner Cemetery is a historic graveyard dating back to 1785 and is the final resting place of Native Americans, early settlers of Squirrel Hill, and military veterans from the Revolutionary War to the Civil War. This self-guided tour will take you to some of the notable graves and other locations in the cemetery with historical significance. This event is free, and you can learn more about the event.
