Alien Registration Requirement

An updated "Alien Registration Requirement" went into effect on April 11.  In most cases, Carnegie Mellon students and scholars are already in compliance with this registration requirement. Nonimmigrants who were issued I-94 arrival records at the time of their admission to the U.S. (as should be the case for all students and scholars in F, J, H, TN or O statuses) and U.S. permanent residents are considered to be registered already, and no additional registration is required.

However, the new requirement may impact children who turn 14 years of age while in the U.S. They must complete the registration process within 30 days of turning 14, even though they have previously received an I-94 and were previously considered to be "registered." If you have a child who will turn 14, the registration process can be found on the USCIS website.

As a reminder, we recommend people carry a copy of their proof of "registration" (the I-94 form), either an electronic copy on your phone or a paper copy that you carry around in your bag/wallet, when moving around the campus/city area and a paper copy when traveling domestically.

We wish you all the best for the remainder of the spring semester, and encourage you to reach out to OIE if you have questions or concerns.
