CRIME ALERT 24-001

Date/Time of Incident: September 17 @ 4 a.m.

Location of Incident: 4700 Block of Fifth Avenue

Type of Incident: Aggravated Assault Description of Incident: Early Tuesday morning, September 17, at approximately 4 a.m., a CMU student was walking in the 4700 block of Fifth Avenue when an unknown individual walked toward them, punched them in the head, and chased them into the street. The assailant then turned and walked away, while the student continued to their residence. This incident was reported to CMUPD on Tuesday afternoon and an investigation was initiated.

On Tuesday evening at 6:17 p.m., CMUPD Officers were dispatched to the 5000 block of Forbes Avenue near the Cohon University Center for an individual who was sitting in the middle of the roadway blocking traffic. Officers quickly recognized that this individual was likely the same person who engaged in the assault that occurred earlier in the day. As officers attempted to communicate, the individual began yelling incoherently and walked away from the officers. Since this individual was suspected in the earlier assault, officers then attempted to detain the individual but were faced with physical resistance. Officers were able to use standard restraint techniques to overcome the individual’s resistance and place them into handcuffs. The assailant was then transported to the Allegheny County Jail.

The assailant will be charged with multiple crimes, including aggravated assault, simple assault, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

The assailant was not injured during the confrontation, however multiple officers suffered minor injuries.

General Prevention and Safety Tips:
  • Stay alert to your surroundings at all times.
