Candace serves as the assistant dean of Student Affairs for Civility Initiatives. In her role, she is responsible for designing and leading initiatives geared toward proactive community building and engagement with an emphasis on civility. These efforts are intended to increase opportunities for civil discourse, enhance students’ capacity to resolve conflicts, and assist in cultivating a deep sense of self-awareness and belonging through dialogue and restorative practices. Candace is an alum of Westminster College and Duquesne University, and she is currently pursuing her doctorate at the University of Pittsburgh.

Civility Advisory Committee

The purpose of the Civility Advisory Committee is to advise and provide comprehensive feedback to the Assistant Dean for Civility Initiatives on civility goals, initiatives, and priorities at Carnegie Mellon University. Members will serve as “civility champions” in the campus community to increase awareness of and engagement in civility work.

Responsibilities of the Civility Advisory Committee

  • To uphold Carnegie Mellon University Shared Tenets of Civility.
  • To support the development of strategic goals and initiatives and serve as collaborative partners in executing initiatives when applicable (i.e. the Civility Series).
  • To engage in information-sharing on civility-related concerns or considerations based on trends surfacing in their respective areas, the University, or higher education broadly.

Core Team

The Core Team will comprise of five members representing a cross section of campus life. Staff members will be invited to serve by the Assistant Dean for Civility Initiatives, and student representatives will be nominated by their governing body.

Full Committee

The full Civility Advisory Committee will consist of up to 10 additional staff and faculty members who have been identified as key collaborators. These members will be nominated by their respective departments, and they will serve as critical voices in shaping the direction and execution of civility efforts.
