Tepper School Doctoral Program Celebrates Presidential Fellows

At an award ceremony this spring, Tepper School of Business Ph.D. students were recognized for earning Presidential Fellowships during the academic year.

The fellowship provides one year of financial support to doctoral students at Carnegie Mellon University who have contributed an impactful body of work to their field of research. The Presidential Fellowship program was established in 2014 by then-President Subra Suresh.

Tepper School Presidential Fellows:

Paul and James W. Wang – Sercomm Presidential Graduate Fellowship
Recipient: Qiaochu Wang

Wang studies the economic implications of emerging technologies such as AI, advanced algorithms, and their impact on various industries. He is particularly fascinated by the algorithms used in automated pricing, algorithmic lending, and algorithmic hiring, and their implications for competition and welfare.

Graduating from the Tepper School doctoral program this month, Wang will be joining the Stern School of Business at New York University as an assistant professor.

Henry J. Gailliot Presidential Fellowship
Recipient: Liying Qiu 

Qiu is studying the interaction of economics and artificial intelligence (AI), focusing on algorithmic collusion, reliability, and fairness. She also explores how AI influences business applications, aiming to forge innovative solutions, paving the way for more equitable and efficient business practices.

Recipient: Flora Feng

Feng’s interests lie in the application of computer vision, generative artificial intelligence, and various machine learning techniques to marketing quandaries, leveraging the vast potential of information harbored in unstructured data.

Tata Consultancy Services [TCS] Presidential Fellowship
Recipient: Yikang Shen

Shen’s research is on digital platforms, media economics, and the crypto market.


About the Ph.D. Program at the Tepper School of Business

Doctoral graduates and faculty at the Tepper School share an impressive legacy of path-breaking research and global recognition that includes nine Nobel laureates. In this small, serious-minded program, Ph.D. students benefit from close working relationships with faculty, advisors, and classmates. 

There are eight focused fields of study in the doctoral program and joint Ph.D. degrees in conjunction with other world-class colleges across Carnegie Mellon University.
