The Tepper School of Business is proud to recognize two members of our community who have been selected as recipients of Carnegie Mellon University’s 2025 Celebration of Education Awards. These honors highlight the exceptional dedication, innovation, and impact of our faculty and staff in advancing the educational mission of the university.

Dr. Maria Tomprou, Assistant Teaching Professor of Organizational Behavior and Theory, has been awarded the Teaching Innovation Award in recognition of her exceptional creativity and effectiveness in the classroom. Her unique and thoughtful approach to instruction stood out to the award committee for its originality and measurable impact on student learning.

Group projects in business school can feel unfair, with some students doing more work than others and little guidance on how to address imbalances. Dr. Tomprou tackled this by creating Unhide, a tool that lets students recognize peers who quietly contribute in meaningful ways. By highlighting these “hidden diamonds,” Unhide shifts the focus from problems to appreciation, encouraging a more supportive and balanced team dynamic.

Dr. Tomprou’s work has had broad influence across disciplines, particularly in her courses on team dynamics, leadership, and managing across cultures. Her innovative teaching strategies continue to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes, reflecting the high standards of excellence we strive for at the Tepper School.

Dr. Jennifer Wegner, Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Programs, has been named the recipient of the Award for Outstanding Contributions to Academic Advising and Mentoring. This award recognizes her steadfast commitment to supporting undergraduate students throughout their academic journeys.

“Throughout my time at CMU, I have always felt more confident knowing I have Jennifer to reach out to if I need,” said Junior Business Administration student, Caitlyn McCready. “Her enthusiasm for students' futures allows students to feel confident in themselves. I am grateful for the way Jennifer has been able to impact my education, my attitude, and my professional path.”

Her influence extends beyond academics, positively shaping students’ personal development and long-term success. In addition to transforming individual student experiences, she has significantly strengthened the overall impact of academic advising at the Tepper School.

Dr. Wegner transformed academic advising from a checklist approach into a personalized, empowering experience. She helps students explore their interests, make confident decisions, and take ownership of their education. As Assistant Dean, she leads a team of advisors and mentors over 100 students, with a special focus on Tartan Scholars and business majors—encouraging them to take risks, try new things, and create a college journey that’s truly their own.

“These awards reflect the deep dedication and tireless efforts of Maria and Jennifer, and the Tepper School community celebrates their achievements,” said Isabelle Bajeux, Dean and Richard P. Simmons Professor of Finance. “Their work enriches the student experience and upholds the values of innovation, mentorship, and excellence that define our school.”

Tomprou and Wegner will be honored at the Celebration of Education Awards celebration on Thursday, April 24th, 2025.
