Information for Educators

Why teach core competencies in your course or activity/program?

When students develop core competencies (like communication and collaboration skills), their positive impact on the world can be stronger and their disciplinary knowledge and skills can shine brighter. Employers and graduate schools are looking for these skills in their new hires/students but often find them lacking. This is likely because core competencies are not always taught with the same deliberation and coordination as disciplinary knowledge. When CMU educators engage in the Core Competencies Initiative, you can leverage resources and strategies that are already designed within a coherent framework and ready for your adaptation and use. The more CMU educators use these resources, we are creating positive synergies such that students can build momentum in these areas, further facilitating their success.
