Speaker Series

Experts in the humanities and social sciences at Dietrich College regularly contribute to college- and university-wide speaker series.

As members of an institution of higher education, our role is to educate and foster informed and respectful dialogue on complex issues. The humanities and social sciences can help us better understand and communicate about pressing real-world problems.

Deeper Conversations

Deeper Conversations is a university-wide intiative aimed at promoting the power of civil discourse by engaging members of the Carnegie Mellon community in studying and discussing some of the most complex challenges facing society today. For the 2024-2025 academic year: We will be exploring critical topics related to democracy and the election. Dietrich College scholars will speak on political polarization in America and evidence of malevolent nation-state interference in U.S. elections.

Academic Series on the Historical and Political Context of the Israel-Hamas War

The war between Israel and Hamas has brought immense suffering and anxiety to people in Israel, the Gaza Strip, the surrounding region and all over the world. The conflict has come to college campuses and divided us. In spring 2024, Dietrich College and Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy collaborated to create a series of events designed to illuminate the historical, political, cultural and narrative background of the Israel-Hamas war. These events were part of the Deeper Conversations initiative.

Dietrich Deep Dives

In 2020, the college launched Dietrich Deep Dives, engaging, in-depth presentations about critical political and societal issues through the lens of the humanities, social sciences and related fields. These virtual webinars were open to Carnegie Mellon University alumni, students, faculty and staff.
