Immersive Cultural Innovation Fund

Supporting cultural exploration through AR and VR technologies

Established in 2021 by a 2006 Carnegie Mellon University alumnus, the Immersive Cultural Innovation (ICI) Fund supports faculty and graduate students in developing courses and projects that explore storytelling through cutting-edge media, including virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and immersive installations.

This funding fosters innovative, technology-driven work that delves into themes of language, culture and identity, encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration across Carnegie Mellon University's Department of Languages, Cultures & Applied Linguistics (LCAL), School of Art and Integrative Design, Arts and Technology (IDeATe).

The fund focuses on three key areas:

  1. Course Development – Supporting the creation of innovative courses that integrate immersive technologies and storytelling.
  2. Technology-Enhanced Language Learning (TELL) – Promoting projects that enhance language learning through the use of immersive tools and techniques.
  3. Immersive Media Creation – Encouraging the development of original media projects that push boundaries in storytelling and cultural exploration.
