Announcement: April 17, 2025
Dear colleagues,
I am excited to announce some organizational changes within the SLICE Office that underscore our commitment to enhancing student involvement, civic and community engagement and leadership development at the university.
Since SLICE’s inception in 2016, the team has lived its mission of creating the next generation of leaders and global citizens. Our work with organizations has expanded significantly as we have invested strategically to be a part of students’ everyday experience. We have increased our focus on assessment and educational strategy, and created new leadership programs and opportunities. We have increased connectivity to community-based organizations and established cross-functional partnerships and networks across campus to support our commitment to community engagement.
Given the shifting nature of our work in supporting student engagement on campus and in the local and global communities, and to be best positioned to seize upon new opportunities, we will be creating two new departments — the Office of Community Engagement and Leadership Development and the Office of Student Involvement and Traditions.
The Office of Community Engagement and Leadership Development will remain under the outstanding leadership of Liz Vaughan. The establishment of a new department focused on our community engagement and leadership development work is a testament to the vision Liz set when she was named the James and Sharon Rohr Director of Civic Engagement in 2019. At that time, she became the first and only individual to hold an endowed directorship within our Division. Under Liz’s leadership, the Nexus of Civic Engagement soon followed, with her passionate contributions paving the way for this next step. As we expand our community engagement work and integrate community impact into our leadership development programs, we remain aligned with the university’s commitment to societal impact. With a sharpened focus, this re-organization allows us to set the course on meaningfully involving every student in community engagement and leadership development work. Liz will continue to oversee and guide these critical efforts, ensuring that our students remain deeply engaged in addressing societal needs throughout their time at Carnegie Mellon. To ensure alignment with our new department, Liz will become the James and Sharon Rohr Director of Community Engagement and relatedly, the collaborative space will become the Nexus of Community Engagement.
Under the leadership of Elizabeth Koch, a new Office of Student Involvement and Traditions will be established. Elizabeth’s decade-long tenure with us has been marked by outstanding dedication and myriad contributions to student engagement and development. This promotion to Director of Student Involvement and Traditions and new role as department head reflects her ongoing commitment to support the educational experiences of our students as they pursue their many passions outside the classroom. Elizabeth’s leadership has consistently demonstrated a profound understanding of student needs and a passion for creating a vibrant student experience. We are confident that her guidance will continue to foster an environment where student involvement flourishes.
Both departments will continue working in harmony to support our students' growth and involvement on and off campus. [...]
Please join us in congratulating Elizabeth and Liz on their new roles and in celebrating these exciting developments for their teams. We look forward to the continued positive impact these changes will bring to our community.
Best,
