Who We Are
Our institute brings together a multidisciplinary group of researchers and educators who work with practitioners in public health and emergency management agencies. Our collaborators are drawn from universities, government agencies, NGOs, private companies, community colleges, and K-12 schools. Led by experts from Carnegie Mellon's School of Computer Science and Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences, the institute also includes researchers from Harvard University, Boston Children’s Hospital, Howard University, Penn State University, Texas A&M University, the University of Washington, Florida State University, the MITRE Corporation, Navajo Technical University, and Winchester Thurston School.
Management Team
Aarti Singh's research lies at the intersection of machine learning, statistics and signal processing, and focuses on designing principled interactive algorithms for learning and decision-making. She earned her Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and was a postdoctoral research associate at Princeton University before joining Carnegie Mellon University's School of Computer Science, where she's a Professor in the Machine Learning Department.
Cleotilde Gonzalez, Co-Director
Cleotilde (Coty) Gonzalez is a Research Professor in the Department of Social and Decision Sciences at CMU, where her work focuses on the study of human decision-making in dynamic and complex environments. She earned her Ph.D. in management information systems from Texas Tech University in 1996 and was a postdoctoral fellow in CMU's Tepper School of Business before joining the faculty in 2000.
Jeff Schneider, Co-PI
Jeff Schneider is a Research Professor in the Robotics Institute at CMU, where his work focuses on real-world industrial and commercial applications of active learning, data mining, reinforcement learning, optimization, and intelligent control. He earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Rochester and was a postdoctoral fellow in the Robotics Institute at CMU.
Ariel Procaccia, Co-PI
Ariel Procaccia is a Gordon McKay Professor of Computer Science at Harvard University. His work focuses on a broad and dynamic set of problems related to AI, algorithms, economics, and society, and he takes a particular interest in projects that combine both theory and direct applications. He earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and was a Posdoctoral Fellow in the School of Engineering and Applied Science at Harvard. He was also previously an Associate Professor of Computer Science at CMU.
Terri Adams-Fuller, Co-PI
Terri Adams-Fuller is a Professor in the Department of Sociology and Criminology at Howard University and Associate Dean of the Office of External Affairs. Her research focuses on emergency management, behavioral responses to disasters, and individuals' and organizations' decision-making processes in the face of crisis events. She earned her Ph.D. in Sociology from Howard University.
Rebecca Nugent, Education & Outreach Lead
Rebecca Nugent is the Department Head and Stephen E. and Joyce Fienberg Professor for the Statistics & Data Science and the Department Head for the Carnegie Mellon Statistics & Data Science Department, and an affiliated faculty member of the Block Center for Technology and Society. She received her PhD in Statistics from the University of Washington in 2006. Prior to that, she received her B.A. in Mathematics, Statistics, and Spanish from Rice University and her M.S. in Statistics from Stanford University.
